#glaubandich-Challenge:
Surgebright is start-up of the year 2018

  • Almost 300 start-ups made their pitches at Austria’s largest start-up competition
  • SzeleSTIM came in second and eet-energy third.

Erste Bank and Sparkassen, Trending Topics, WKO Gründerservice and Puls4 invited start-ups to take part in the largest start-up competition of the year in Austria. “Almost 300 start-ups participating, submitting really cool ideas, real problem solvers and very innovative services,” said  Thomas Schaufler, Retail CEO at Erste Bank in his comment on the surge of bidders for the #glaubandich Challenge. The winners from among the ten top start-ups of the country were celebrated at the closing event. “Start-up of the year 2018” is surgebright, which developed a bone transplant together with SharkScrew that replaces metal screws. Second place was attained by SzeleSTIM with a pain therapy wearable, and third place was awarded to eet-energy for the balcony solar plant SolMate.

“We are pleased that we represented Upper Austria so well,” said Lukas Pastl, co-founder of surgebright. The start-up will concentrate initially on the markets in Austria, Germany and Switzerland, but “We are already exploring the US and Asia,” Pastl said. The winner receives EUR 10,000, a starting place in the casting for the Puls4 startup show “2 Minuten 2 Millionen”, a p.r. service package for EUR 10,000 from Trending Topics and a place in the exclusive Startup Executive Academy 2018 of Silicon Castles in Salzburg.

Surgebright won over the jury for several reasons: “The EUR 62 million in costs that can be saved in the healthcare system and also the fact that the patients do not need a second operation,” explained Thomas Schaufler as spokesman of the jury.

10 finalists made their pitches in Vienna for the title “Start-up of the year 2018”

The nine best start-ups from all provinces of Austria and the winner of the trending topics reading vote met yesterday, 25 June 2018, at Erste Campus in Vienna for the finals of the #glaubandich Challenge. In just six minutes, the participants presented their concept and answered questions from the six-person jury made up of Katharina Schneider (Media Shop), Heinrich Prokop (clever clover), Michael Altrichter (startup300), Thomas Schaufler (Erste Bank), Elisabeth Zehetner-Piewald (WKO) and Gerald Reischl (Trending Topics). The winner of the #glaubandich Challenge 2018 was selected based on a combination of jury votes and sms votes by the audience.

Start-up scene is growing

The Sparkassen Group has been involved in the founder and start-up scene for more than 16 years. Apart from numerous services relating to the establishment of a company, the savings group also provides advice on financial assistance, business plans, financing and similar themes at its Start-up Centres in each of the provinces. Currently five new companies are founded every day with funding from the Sparkasse Group. “We believe that the founder scene will continue to grow in the coming years. Bank loans are still the most important source of funding for new companies,” explained Schaufler.
