Bringing Trucks onto Rails with Vegatrans
Trucks are an indispensable component of freight transport on roads in Europe. However, they are also a significant source of CO2 emissions. With the roadrailLink (r2L) project, Vega International Car Transport & Logistic - Trading GesmbH has introduced an important innovation to the market to more easily shift this traffic from road to rail.
Previously, the transport of trucks across national borders by rail was not possible due to height restrictions. Vega’s solution has created the missing link to bring commercial vehicles of all kinds from road to rail. Vega now transports up to 1000 trucks/trailers per week on various rail lines across Europe, saving up to 500 tons of CO2 per week. This intermodal transport and handling technology marks a significant advancement in rail transport. This technology enables the transport of all non-craneable semi-trailers, silo, and refrigerated trailers, contributing to making the delivery of commercial vehicles more environmentally friendly. The r2L connectors, also known as RoadrailLink, can be loaded onto standard pocket wagons at any combined transport terminal with the help of reach stackers or gantry cranes. As 95% of the semi-trailers on the road were previously not cranable and can only be transported by rail with the new r2L system, the CO2 savings potential of this Austrian invention is significant.
