Built in 1902, the Gösserhalle can look back on a varied history. Originally built as a workshop building for ÖBB, the hall was converted into a beer warehouse for the Gösser company in the middle of the 20th century and later used as an event location in particular. Now the Gösserhalle has been extensively revitalised, extended and an innovative and sustainable energy supply system for the provision of heating and cooling from Beyond Carbon Energy (BCE) has been installed.

Financing of a sustainable energy supply system of BCE
The company beyond carbon energy designs, plans, builds and operates CO₂-free energy supply systems for the provision of heating and cooling. The client was Gösserhalle GmbH with the two managing directors Klaus Stanek and Matthias Stanek. The conversion resulted in a contemporary, innovative building that is now used as an office building by Waterdrop, while the restaurant "Das Steinhart" has moved into the southern ground floor as a catering establishment.
Sustainable utilisation of all available resources
All resources available at the site are utilised. The central element of the energy system is 29 geothermal probes, which are used as seasonal ground storage, together with two heat pumps that provide cooling in summer and the thermal energy required to heat the building in winter. The electricity required to operate the heat pumps comes from the photovoltaic system on the roof as well as from 100% green electricity from the grid. This solution enables an annual reduction of 79 tonnes of CO₂.
"We are proud to be commissioning the new energy supply system for the Gösserhalle. This project is a good example of our vision of a sustainable and CO₂-emission-free energy future. Based on our many years of experience with such systems, we are confident that this will be a showcase project for the decarbonisation of the 'existing city' in Vienna," explains Herbert Hetzel, CEO and reasons for the project.
"The remodelling of the Gösserhalle shows what a high-quality combination of old and new can look like. It was important to me that the special architecture was optimally combined with innovative building technology. The Beyond Carbon Energy concept has achieved this perfectly," says Klaus Stanek.
The Gösserhalle is the first project in which a heating and cooling system powered exclusively by geothermal energy and photovoltaics has been realised without additional technical equipment such as recooling systems for the catering waste heat or additional heating systems. The first two months of operation have already shown that this innovative technology delivers what it promises in practice.
