Erste Group Bank AG (“Erste Group”) has been selected as the “Best Bank in Central and Eastern Europe” by Euromoney, one of the world’s leading financial publications, as part of its 2022 Awards for Excellence. Erste Group’s subsidiaries in Austria, Slovakia and Romania also garnered Euromoney’s “Best Bank” awards for their local markets.

“Being selected by Euromoney as the ‘Best Bank in CEE’ is welcome recognition of our success in servicing our customers and engaging our stakeholders in what continues to be a challenging environment in our region. This award -- together with our ‘Best Bank’ distinctions for Austria, Slovakia and Romania -- also underlines the very solid position from which Erste Group can build on its role as the leading financial services provider in the Eastern part of the EU by becoming a Financial Health Company for the region and its people,” says Willi Cernko, CEO of Erste Group.

In addition to awarding Erste Group the “Best Bank” distinction for the CEE region as a whole, Euromoney also gave national “Best Bank” titles to three of the banking group’s subsidiaries:

  • Austria: Erste Bank und Sparkassen
  • Slovakia: Slovenská sporiteľňa
  • Romania: Banca Comercială Română (BCR)

Gerda Holzinger-Burgstaller, the CEO of Erste Bank Oesterreich (EBOe), welcomes the “Best Bank in Austria” award for EBOe and the Austrian Savings Banks (“Sparkassen”): “A very solid business performance is not the only reason Erste Bank und Sparkassen managed to win Euromoney’s ‘Best Bank in Austria’ distinction. The award confirms our leadership in digitalization, with the aim of making banking smarter, more relevant and even more accessible for our customers. It also acknowledges the very real progress we’ve made in putting ESG principles and our self-understanding as a responsible part of civil society into practice through a wide range of initiatives and co-operations.”

Established in 1992, Euromoney’s Awards for Excellence acknowledge stand-out performance in the global banking industry. The specialist publication’s award decisions are made by a committee of Euromoney senior journalists, following the receipt of detailed submissions from market participants and extensive year-round research into the banking and capital markets in the region.
