The FairSplit App: “Friendship is friendship, but accounts must be kept”
- A customer's idea has been implemented as an app
- FairSplit can also be used by non-customers
- App strategy: A suitable app for every kind of use
Something new from the app-factory of Erste Bank und Sparkassen: With immediate effect, FairSplit for iOS and Android is available for download in the respective app stores. With FairSplit, joint expenditures of groups can be easily settled up and split fairly. The app was developed in cooperation with customers.

Settling accounts with FairSplit
Settling joint bills after a vacation can often become akin to an exercise in higher mathematics. With FairSplit, the numbers salad dissolves into clearly allocated sums with the tap of a finger and shows who owes how much to whom. The app is not only useful for settling vacation accounts: Apportionment of the costs of joint gifts, or the monthly accounts of a residential community can simply be taken care of with a smart phone. Groups created in FairSplit are documenting who pays for which expenditures. The members of a group are added via the phone directory and can review group expenditures in the app or at fairsplit.sparkasse.at. Once the “balance accounts” tab is clicked, the app informs all group members of who is still owing how much and to whom. In order to speed up settlement, account details can be mailed out as well. The app can also be used by customers of other banks.
Apps by customers for customers
The idea for FairSplit was provided by a customer. At an s Lab workshop, the co-creation platform of Erste Bank, the concept was fleshed out and developed further. The developer team at Erste Hub, the innovations laboratory of Erste Bank und Sparkassen, ultimately realized it. “I think it's brilliant that suggestions for improvements by customers are taken seriously and are incorporated”, says delighted s Lab user Lovro Zekusic, who brought the idea to s Lab.
The FairSplit app is embedded in Erste Bank's clearly defined mobile strategy: For concrete and relevant applications, specific apps suitable for everyday use are made available, which accompany customers in their digital financial life, making it simpler and improving it. Several apps have already been launched in recent years, such as Wechselstube for placing foreign currency orders while on the road, or Hilfreich, a donations app for the most innovative way of doing charity.
