The #believeinyourself story by Christa Maier
“I’m happy when I see people using George on their mobile phones,” says Christa Maier. She started out at the Sparkassen Group as a customer service representative back in 1989 and has dedicated the past 10 years of her career to George. She was there when George was born, and today, together with Isabella Frey, she leads a team of 20 product owners at George Labs. Her role requires openness to new ideas and steady nerves, and she masters the challenges she encounters in her job with a great deal of dedication and enthusiasm for George.
The daily work with George involves many #believeinyourself moments – one of them was pulling off a solution that enabled almost 12 million euros being donated for Ukrainian refugees in a very short time.
One #believeinyourself moment has particular significance for the team. “At the end of February, I got an email from BCR, Erste Group’s subsidiary in Romania, pointing out that since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, many people had fled to Romania and that we should do something for them – all of us, across the whole of Erste Group,” Christa tells us. Starting from there, they came up with the idea to make it easier for customers to donate in George – with just one click.
Implementing this one-click donation feature in George involved many challenges. One can’t develop an application like this overnight if it is supposed to work for 8 million customers. For example, the minimum requirements for a bank transfer – particularly which fields are mandatory and must be completed – vary from country to country. And it’s not quite easy to go live with a new version of the app, because Apple or Google’s specifications always have to be considered and a rollout doesn’t happen at the push of a button, but rather in stages. In situations like this, a high-performing team is crucial. Her many years of experience have also helped Christa to keep her calm even when the pressure was high.
And everything worked out well in the end...
Christa remembers: “The cooperation throughout the Group was incredible! We all pulled together and everyone gave their best. I am still hit with emotion when I think back to that time! It is great to see how the impossible becomes possible when we all pull together.” That´s how the one-click donation feature was implemented in George within just one week.
Especially in extreme situations, a high-performing team is crucial.
“With George, of course, it is really important to always stay true to yourself and reliably complete all test cycles until a new feature goes live. And you can’t let negative feedback get you down, no matter how excited you are about a new feature. The important thing is to keep going, believe in yourself and the team, and not to lose your enthusiasm for what you’re doing,” says Christa.
