Carmencita Nader appointed new head of social banking at Erste Bank
There’s been a changing of the guard at the head of the Erste Bank’s ‘Social Banking’ division. Günter Benischek (65), who has built up the department very successfully over the last twelve years, is handing over the management reins to one of the department’s own experts, with Carmencita Nader (36) taking over on 1 May 2021. Nader and her team will continue and further develop the established social-banking activities and co-operations, as well as promote new initiatives and projects. Günter Benischek will remain on as an advisor and will also be a volunteer director of the ‘Zweite Sparkasse’.

‘Social banking is more important than ever before. Whether by helping individuals to help themselves or by supporting our strong network on Austria’s social and NPO scene, our well-established initiatives not only contribute significantly at a financial level, but particularly also at a social level, offering banking services where there otherwise would be none. So I’m looking forward to the fact that my new role will give me effective scope for creating new concepts, and enable me to assist our partners with their projects, and further our valued co-operations with them,’ Carmencita Nader says about her new role.
Carmencita Nader is an economist specialising in international development. She started her professional career in 2007 at the Austrian Institute of Technology, before working at the Bank of New York Mellon in London and as a founding member of the Wipol Akademie. Her career in the Erste Group Bank AG began in 2010, when Nader was an international trainee in the Group Graduate Programme. She has assisted with various social-finance initiatives since 2015, most recently as managing director of an impact investment fund. She has worked in social banking since 2019.
What is Social Banking?
By helping people help themselves, social banking makes an important contribution to the financial and social inclusion of individuals and aid organisations, thereby significantly helping fulfil the United Nations’ 9 Sustainable Development Goals. Among the Erste Bank’s most famous social-banking projects are the Social Housing Initiative, the 360° support for charity and aid organisations and young social entrepreneurs, and the ‘Der Mikrokredit’ programme funded by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Labour.
